Summary--
Strawberry Panic! is a love story between a set of girls that
attend an all girl school. The the story revolves around the emotional
development of these girls.
Nagisa Aoi is the main focus in this title. She is the love
interest of two other girls, Tamao and Shizuma. The story runs in
tandem with the growing love between Nagisa and Shizuma and the
attempts of Tamao to keep Nagisa to herself. As the love grows between
Negisa and Shizuma we gain more insight into the past of Shizuma and
the reason that it is difficult to attach to Negisa. The hard time
Shizuma has connecting to Negisa is used as a wedge that Tamao uses to
develop a relationship with Negisa.
The other story of interest is between Hikari Konohana and Amane.
This couple quickly become and item. This strong bond is constantly
challenged by two factions. The first is Yaya Nanto, Hikari's roommate.
She loves Hikari but quickly learns that Hikari has no intention to
develop that kind of relationship with Yaya even though Hikari relies
on her as her dearest friend. The other competition Amane and Hikari have is with Kaname Kenjō
and Momomi Kiyashiki. These two are trying to take over the position of
Etoille. Kaname uses her domineering attitude to try to drive a wedge
between Hikari and Amane. The point was to make Amane to be uneligible
for Etoille, but it later seems that she may have had an alterer
motive.
Pros --
This anime has has many good points. The best thing are the
interpersonal connections that the characters form between each other.
They form real bonds that make the characters connect on a human level
and draws the viewer into the world that these girls live. They become
a believable part of the theme and validate the story.
For instance the growth the Nagisa and Shizuma in opposition to
the possessive desires of Tamao, then the qualities of these three
would lack the natural human elements of desire that connect us on a personal level with them. Most of us have felt that sensation of desire
for something that is out of our reach and as such lets us connect with
Tamao. As such, We also connect with Shizuma on the level of having a
tragedy in our past that we think even our loved ones may not fully
understand and accept. These thing allow us to connect with these characters on a human
level. That surpasses the basic plot and takes us to the human element
that creates the characters in this story.
The plot elements between Hikari and Amane are important in a
different way. This is a connection with longing for the person you are
meant for. Hikari and Amane are a couple that has connected. They are
an item that is not to be separated. As the opposing characters attempt
to separate them they fail because of this strong spiritual connection.
This connection lets us feel the human bond between these two and
generates a believable environment that encompasses a wide range of
feelings and emotions. This scale of humanity is what make this anime a
compelling thing to watch.
Cons --
The one major problem I have with this anime is the complete and
total lack of any male involvement. They don't even seem to question
the fact that men even exist. This makes the girl-girl love less
abrasive but what constantly nagged in my mind was, did anyone think
this is wrong. It seemed like every girl was a lesbian. This separated
from the reality that tied me so closely to the characters. It was the
one thing that is a dark spot on an otherwise spectacular love story.
Conclusion and ratings--
This anime is a quality love story with excellent plot and great
characters. Other than one tarnish it kept me watching from the time I
got off work till the moment I had to go to bed. Every character had
this thing that you loved about them, and the villains had the darkness
that made you hate yet understand them. They were not evil for evils
sake they were truly driven to it by their own desire.
Music-B, Nothing special, it gives environment and feeling but doesn't take my breath away.
Art- B+, really good art, the backdrop, and school are
fantastically rendered, the characters have a vast array of expression.
But some of their motion seems unnatural but it is rather hard to
notice unless your looking.
Story - A-
Overall- B+
